Not often enough do I get a chance to take pictures of my own love’s. At 5yrs and 3yrs , Ayden and Ava could care less that Mommy wants to take pictures, and I usually end up bribing them with Dove Chocolate’s.. (yes they have great taste), BUT our youngest Adeline is another story. She’s at that FUN 6 month stage where her eyes light up at my goofy antics, and there’s a smile constantly plastered on her beautiful face (And these days that smile is followed with a lot of drool as teething has officially hit her hard) What else is Miss Addie doing?? CRAWLING! YAY!!
Since my kids are home with me today I got a chance to sit and play with Addie while her older siblings had nap/quiet time… It’s amazing how the world can just fade away, the “tidy” house, the constant to do lists & lists, the piles of fabrics & ribbons that need to be formed into wearable designs, the laundry (YUCK)….. all gone as soon as your child looks at you with that big toothless (for now!) grin, those bright eyes and dimples a flashing, and reaches for you.. Gets me every time!
After some playtime, we got down to work and Addie modeled some of Dee’s Desyns awesome hats! These hats are so comfortable & soft Addie didn’t mind wearing them at all, she never once reached up to take them off! But since it’s such a warm day here today I didn’t want them on her to long… so we tried on Dee’s latest creation, the flower headband! I love it!!
Then Addie went on to “model” some of my designs (Captured By Maggie Designs).. by this point there was still a smile on her face.. but she was DONE. lol!
Disks, Watermarks & Copyrights Oh my! {MN Portrait & Wedding Photographer}
Disks, Watermarks & Copyrights Oh My! These are touchy subjects, and many a dispute has been had over these topics in the photography business, with the common conclusion being to each photographer their own. Many very successful photographers (and photographers I admire) do not offer disks, and do not do online proofing or put their images online. Fellow photographers understand why, but potential clients, current clients, parents, seniors, YOU may not understand why. So I wanted to take this time to address these topics and to explain my policies & approach to them and why I do what I do.
We’ll start off with Disks.
There are 2 kinds of disks that I offer-
1. High Resolution Disks with Printing Rights-Just like it sounds these are the high resolution versions of your final images, it comes with a printing rights release so you can take this disk and get prints made. HOWEVER, you can not give these disks/images to a magazine or a album vendor, or another designer. These images can not be altered or edited, they can only be printed.
Can you take them to a Printing Lab and get prints? Yes.
Can you personally upload them to a online printing site (tinyprints.com for example) and make the image into a card? Yes. (But, I also design and print cards and we can make a custom personal card that no one else will have that is totally YOU! http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=119632&id=82525959588)
Can I submit the images to a chilren’s modeling contest (or another contest)? NO. You need to ask MY permission first and I will give you a specially sized and watermarked image for contests.
I love the images, can I submit them to a magazine or online site to show them off? NO. Thank you! Let’s share them, but you need to ask MY permission first. I will submit specially watermarked & sized images for you.
Can you take them to a graphic designer and have them design something? NO. You need to ask MY permission first. Why? They can’t alter, edit, or crop my images, AND in many cases I can do the design work you are looking for. (Just ask!).
Why so many NO’s??
The copyright of the images always remains with me, you are granted a printing rights release ONLY. When putting my images online, with or without a watermark there is always someone out there who will ruin it for everyone. I watermark my images to protect my work (someone else claiming my images as theirs) this is how I feed my family, I do this full time not just for fun. I have an investment into my work financially and emotionally and that brings me to my next reason..
I watermark and maintain my copyright to protect YOU & YOURS. To many times I’ve had my images stolen or worse images of children have showed up on some questionable sites. It’s amazing and at times disgusting what people do with images from the web. Unfortunately there are bad people in the world, and those people are online. I get upset when my images are stolen and claimed by someone else, but what gets me really fired up is when my images of my clients are used in a manner that is WRONG and with out their knowledge.
Which brings me to the other type of disk I offer.
2. Low Resolution Web Ready Disks- Just like it sounds, low resolution versions of your images with my watermark on them.
These disks do not have a printing release. These images are ONLY for viewing and sharing on the web. They are sized smaller and have a lower dpi (which means they will not print correctly, they will pixelate). They are watermarked as addressed above to protect you and I.
These disks are like a digital proof book that can be put on facebook or just viewed from the disk. I only ask that I am tagged in the images if they are uploaded to facebook or that I am given credit if used on any other website for viewing.

So, if you want a disk it’s always an option. Is it my 1st choice for you? NO. I think your money could be spent in a much better way. Once you purchase a disk for printing, you then also have to pay the printing costs. I think a much better way to spend your money would be to purchase a brag book of all your images and then an put your favorites up in amazing wall collection like this! To many times disks sit unused with your images not being showed off and appreciated!
Still interested in a disk? I think they are GREAT for Archival purposes!!

Yep, I”m officially on maternity leave, and while I”m not taking new sessions, I am working. I have a lot of behind the scenes design to get done as well as tweaking my pricing/services and more! I’ve learned a new motto, well 2.
